How Did Ancient Civilizations Flourish?

By Marianne Hartshorne / October 11, 2026 / No Comments / Author News

Have you ever wondered how ancient civilizations flourished?

This question, especially when it comes to ancient Egypt, has held my curiosity for many years.

When I first visited Egypt in 2011 and stood among some of its ancient historical sites, I was completely awestruck. Seeing the temples, monuments, and other remnants of a civilization that existed thousands of years ago was an experience I’ll never forget.

Ever since, I’ve had what I jokingly call “the Egypt bug.” 🇪🇬

I’m fascinated by ancient Egyptian architecture and often find myself wondering: How did they build all of this? How did they move enormous stones, construct such impressive structures, and create buildings that have endured for thousands of years?

But my curiosity goes beyond architecture.

I often wonder what everyday life was like for the ancient Egyptians. What did they eat? What were their homes like? What did they believe? How did they spend their days? What were their hopes, fears, relationships, and struggles?

For me, those questions are what make history come alive.

And eventually, that fascination found its way into my writing.

My love of ancient Egypt became one of the inspirations behind my Sands of Time historical fiction series. Through my stories, I’ve had the opportunity to explore a world that has fascinated me for years while imagining what it might have been like to step into the lives of the people who lived there.

Perhaps that’s one of the reasons historical fiction appeals to me so much: it allows us to look at the past not only through monuments and artifacts, but through the people who lived, loved, struggled, and dreamed within those ancient worlds.

The more I learn about ancient Egypt, the more questions I have—and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
